What is 11th November?

Today everyone has been silent for 2 minutes at work, then I realized it’s Poppy Day (Remembrance Day). You may see there are plastic poppy flowers selling in the store recently.

The red poppy flowers are the symbol of remembrance of the sacrifices made in past wars. The destruction brought by the Napoleonic wars of the early 19th Century transformed bare land into fields of blood red poppies, growing around the bodies of the fallen soldiers. The main war battlefield of First World War was in Europe and Africa, but China was there.

The Past

The First Sino-Japanese War not only broke the gate to China, but it woke us up from our four thousands year dream. During the two decades of First World War, China had such an earthshaking changes. We didn’t send a single army to the battlefield, instead, many countries took Chinese labourers to help. For instance, Britain recruited nearly 100,000 of Chinese. War does not determine who is right, only who is left.

The Present

In fact, 11th November is not well known as a memorial day of war, but an online shopping day in China. The total sales amount on Taobao (Chinese online shopping website, similar as Amazon) reached to 1030 billion CNY (150 Billion USD). The first 52 seconds of this day was 10 billion while at the 6th minute was 100 billion. 11th November became the craziest shopping day.

Not long time ago, 11th November was more like Single’s Day, it was an entertainment festival for people don’t have partners, boyfriends or girlfriends. On this day, many of the young people will have parties or activities to meet someone or make friends. Therefore, it’s also known as the day of “get rid of the solo”. Some of the shops or stores saw the chances to attract the young people, so they started the promotions on this day. Since 2009, Taobao made it as an online sales festival.

The sales of Taobao not only made lots of small sellers rich, but it attracted many famous companies to join the online sales. The sales are incredible and it directly made a huge impact on shipment. The fastest delivery of 11th November 2016 only took 13 minutes. Can you believe it? It actually made our business blooming, but no one knows how long it might last.

I have no comment on what people do on 11th November, for my husband, it is the independent day for his country, for the people who lives in the UK, it is the memorial day, for me as a Chinese, it’s a shopping day.
